Welcome to Gentle Musings, a publication about reconnecting with yourself, experiencing life as a creative practice, and living out loud. Gentle Musings is a reader-supported publication. To receive new posts and support this work, consider becoming a free or paid subscriber.
What I know to be true: when life is sweet, it deserves to be written.
And if we’re called to write during our life, when we are overcome by massive desecration and devastation and impunity, writing what is true is indispensable.
I’m opening up a journaling circle for 30 minutes for paid subscribers tomorrow at 11am eastern time. If you need to have some time to get your thoughts on the page, I hope you join us.
If you’ve been constantly refreshing the news and feel like your head is spinning or saturated with thoughts, I hope you join us.
If you want to write so that you can end or start your week with a connection to what matters most to you, I hope you join us.
And if life is really sweet for you at the moment, I hope you join us so that you can record the details of everything you’re cherishing.

In case you don’t know: Gentle Musings is both the name of this Substack and a podcast where I share exploratory thoughts straight from the heart. Common themes include creative practices, resilience, writing, vulnerability, connection, creative permission, and being a deep-feeling person who cares a lot about creative living.
In the episode above, I mention the New Moon Writing Gathering. This has since evolved to the Journaling Circle (which is on the last Sunday of every month through 2024).
I also share a line from the powerful poem V'ahavta by Aurora Levins Morales. If you haven’t read this poem before, I can’t think of a better time than today.
Here’s an excerpt, the last sentence of which is the subject of this letter:
Say these words when you lie down and when you rise up,
when you go out and when you return. In times of mourning
and in times of joy. Inscribe them on your doorposts,
embroider them on your garments, tattoo them on your shoulders,
teach them to your children, your neighbors, your enemies,
recite them in your sleep, here in the cruel shadow of empire:
Another world is possible.…
Don’t waver. Don’t let despair sink its sharp teeth
Into the throat with which you sing. Escalate your dreams.
We’re going to explore this together tomorrow through writing. I hope to see you there ❣️
