This musing is all about re-infusing some beauty and freshness into the spaces that we call home. It was originally written in spring 2021.
Let’s talk about home.
It’s one of my favorite things: hearing about homes, dreaming about homes, reading about and decorating home spaces. Making home. Being right on the cusp of spring, it seems like a timely topic.
Let’s talk about home at a time when so many people have been cooped up, often overworked, and ready for the opportunity to leave home more in the spring. To go on longer walks. To sit outside and feel the warming air.
It feels fraught to talk about home, always but especially at this time. I think about forceful displacement, I think about climate collapse, I think about how unsafe and unknown any felt-sense of home is for so many people, how the concept can be tangled in ancestral and ongoing trauma.
Right now in the US, evictions are booming. In Texas, for example, Houston has 577 eviction cases this week1, as “Less than 10% of Houston eviction cases have been stopped by the CDC moratorium.”2 I still feel astonished by the depth of unnecessary, systemic cruelty.
Personally, I’ve been in-between homes for a little too long.
