Welcome to Gentle Musings
thanks for tuning in :)
This episode was recorded mid-November on a sunny, brisk day. Here’s what I get into in this episode…
I share some of the guiding principles of my work (in this, I share a couple of what I call organizing principles)
The name Gentle Musings
Showing up to share what’s real for me instead of needing to always ‘deliver value’ - small business owners know!
Thoughts on consistency… and reliability
Side note on this after leading a beautiful writing experience about connecting to our creative projects as if they had their own life. When I try to practice consistency in my writing, it slips into feeling obligatory. Desires that become obligations = resentment, frustration, and more resistance. When I shift my focus to reliability, this is what opens: I want my writing to be able to rely on me and trust me—we are in relationship and collaboration together. I might not show up everyday (and I don’t need to), but it is important to me to create a foundation of trust with my work that then nourishes deeper trust in myself.
Updates on easing up on what I refer to as “ambient internet”, a term I started using years ago when I saw how disproportionate its presence was in my life. This is a continued, imperfect quest. So much has shifted for me… There’s more on this topic in the pieces below, and more to come!! Here, I share about Sharing Nights!
A gorgeous passage from a book I just finished, A Circle of Quiet by Madeleine L’Engle. Here’s the last part of it:
It’s easy to say you’re a writer when things are going well. When the decision is made in the abyss, then it is quite clear that it is not one’s own decision at all.
Music in all Gentle Musings episodes is by the marvelous Monsieur Mo Rio.
Also… updates on my site!
The 1:1 Creative Coaching page had a refresh to better reflect the work I do with private clients. I’m looking forward to building into my site more as a home for my work (what that means for Substack, I don’t know!). If you also have a site that you see as it’s own creative project, I’d love to hear your perspectives and about the evolution of your site.
Thank you so much for being here.
One last piece before I sign off: If we’re new to each other, My work is centered around how people relate to creativity (practice, process, and identity). I’m currently working on a research project that explores how women’s experiences within arts-based higher education has impacted their relationship to creativity and how they understand themselves as creative people.
The Details:
40-minute interview
When: Dec 3-18 or Jan 6-24
Who: Women (cis & trans) with arts-based higher ed experience in: fine arts, music, film/media, creative writing, poetry, theater, dance, graphic design, game design/animation, or hybrid disciplines
Includes BA, BFA, MFA, PhD, minor degrees, non-completes, and continuing education
Full details on the study can be found here.
As a thank you for participating, you’re welcome to a free creative coaching session (up to two months after). This page explains more about what that might look like for you.
To participate: Email maggy@regardingdew.com with subject line “Creative Research”.
The goal is to interview at least 50 women. Please share far and wide with friends, family, and colleagues!
